Under the general direction of a supervisor, performs routine building custodial duties, including light and heavy cleaning, and providing minor repairs to buildings and equipment. Work is reviewed on a spot-check basis.  On occasion, the employee may receive more specific instructions concerning a particular assignment and the work is reviewed for compliance with instructions.  Hours may vary (75 hour pay period).

Responsible for duties such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, and waxing the floors and walls of halls, offices, and rooms; operating heavy industrial buffers or scrubbers; cleaning  plumbing fixtures and washrooms; providing washrooms with soap and other necessary supplies; moving furniture and other  equipment; ability to lift objects weighing over (50) fifty pounds, cleaning sidewalks, performing lawn and gardening maintenance; clearing sidewalks of snow and ice; operating the boilers for a small heating plant; providing minor repairs to buildings and equipment; painting; washing windows; changing light bulbs; emptying wastebaskets; and maintaining a general watch over buildings and offices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Sufficient training to insure ability to understand oral instructions.  Ability to interact with the public. A high school diploma or GED and some experience in simple maintenance and cleaning.  Work may involve moving heavy equipment or furniture, carrying and setting up ladders or scaffolding.  Sufficient strength to use hammers and wrenches for minor maintenance is also required. 

DESIRABLE ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGES, AND SKILLS:

Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions, use cleaning tools and operate industrial-type cleaning equipment;  and climb ladders.  In addition, the employee should have some knowledge of modern building cleaning methods and be in good physical condition with no serious defects in hearing or vision.
