Public Welfare

The Department of Public Welfare is administered by the Director of Public Welfare, who is employed by the City. The staff consists of 18 employees.

The State of Rhode Island Department of Human Services is reorganizing and utilizing a regional office concept. This plan includes the closing of our local Welfare Office on 75 James Street. After September 30, 2002, East Providence residents seeking services provided through the Family Independence Program (FIB), Medical Assistant (MA), and general public assistance will have to report to 24 Commerce Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

The local Welfare Department will continue to coordinate a local Thanksgiving Food Drive, the "Make-a-Wish" holiday program for needy residents, and other special programs. Emergency and other referral services will continue to be offered from the local Directors' office.

The Welfare Director is located on the third floor of City Hall, East Providence, Rhode Island 02914.
