The Fire Service functions as part of a Fire Control and Emergency Response System that includes, Fire Prevention, Public Education, Emergency Medical Services, Hazardous Materials Control, and Fire Suppression. This team approach requires the Fire Department to have a close working relationship with other emergency service personnel at the local, state and federal levels.

The Fire Department consists of 119 employees under the supervision of the Fire Chief. The Chief coordinates fire control and emergency medical services, engages in master planning, analyzes cost data, prepares plans for possible disaster, and provides support for other city services.

The Fire Department provides protection and rescue services for the preservation of life and property, in accordance with the City Charter, and enforces all laws, ordinances and regulations relating to fire prevention and fire safety.

The Fire Department headquarters is located next to the Central Fire Station at 913 Broadway. The Rumford Fire Station is located at 30 North Broadway, the Riverside Fire Station at 329 Bullocks Point Avenue, and Kent Heights Fire Station at 66 Wampanoag Trail.
